Fractures And Dislocations Of Elbow

Fractures And Dislocations Of Elbow; These occur as a result of falling onto the hand or elbow. In case only dislocation is present without fracture, dislocation is placed under anesthesia and fixation is performed for a certain period of time. Successful results can be obtained with plaster-splint treatment in non-shifted fractures. Since fractures of the elbows are usually joint fractures, surgical treatment is necessary even in the smallest shift.

Elbow dislocations may be associated with fractures and usually require surgical treatment. Fractured pieces are fixed with plates, wires and screws, ruptured ligaments are fixed to the bone with anchor stitches or directly repaired through the bone sutures. Robust fixation and early motion should be initiated. Since the elbow joint is very sensitive to trauma, the likelihood of incidence of movement limitation is high.

Even soft tissue injuries or long retained plaster splints with no fractures or dislocations can cause restriction on the elbow. Therefore, early movement should be started.
