Osteoarthritis is caused by the damage of joint cartilage over time. Although it is mostly seen in the knee and hip joints, it can also be seen in the shoulder joint. Cartilage deterioration may occur over time due to joint overload. Rheumatic diseases and some systemic diseases may cause osteoarthritis by deteriorating the joint cartilage.
Patients may suffer shoulder pain, limitation of joint movement, stuck on the shoulder joint and sound during movements. The pain increases over time and painful conditions can occur at night.
Treatment is planned according to patient’s complaints, characteristics and expectations.
Initially pain killers, exercise and physical therapy may be helpful. In progressive cases, surgical treatment is applied if the pain is very severe. In the surgery, the damaged joint is removed and artificial joint (prosthesis) is placed. By this way, pains of patients are relieved, as well as their function is increased. It will require physical therapy for at least 6 weeks postoperatively.
