Tendon calcification refers to the storage of calcium (hydroxyapatite) in the rotator cuff tendons. \u00a0Supraspinatus is the most commonly affected tendon.<\/p>\n<p>Radiographs may give the appearance of white calcium where it should not normally be. It usually occurs after a trauma, or after a tendonitis.<\/p>\n<p>Clinically, three stages are observed:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Stage before calcification<\/li>\n<li>Calcific stage<\/li>\n<li>Stage after calcification<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The calcific phase is divided into three phases: formation, rest and resorptive phase. Patients usually apply to the physician in the resorptive phase with severe pain on the outside of the arm. Some movements of the arm may cause pain. In some patients the pain is very severe.<\/p>\n<p>Diagnosis is made by the presence of calcium stores on the X-ray images. \u00a0Calcifications can be detected by radiography. Ultrasonography is a more precise method in experienced hands. Although magnetic resonance has an accuracy of 95%, it is not necessary for diagnosis.<\/p>\n<p>As well as cold application, painkiller and edema-relieving drugs, movements in the acute phase are avoided. Although calcium deposits disappear in some patients over time, in many patients a chronic shoulder complaint with occasional painful periods persists.<\/p>\n<p>In chronic conditions, surgery may require curettage of the calcified region. In the arthroscopic procedure, the patient&#8217;s postoperative complaints are very low and the patient can return to daily life in a short time.<\/p>\n<p>Arthroscopic surgery has proven efficacy, better cosmetic results and easier rehabilitation. However, it is technically difficult to locate the calcifications.
