Fractures

Shoulder fractures are usually caused by falling on the hand with the arm open. Since the bone structure is weaker in this region compared to other regions, fragmented fractures are generally observed. Another important point is that this is an are in elderly people with osteoporosis are very sensitive to trauma.

In general, non-displaced (displaced or slightly displaced) fractures can be successfully treated with a simple shoulder arm sling with weekly x-ray checks.

However, for shifted fractures, surgical treatment is applied for both fracture union and proper position. In the surgical treatment, either fracture fragments are restored and fixed with various implant materials (plate-screws, nails, etc.) or the joint part of the fracture is removed, and a prosthesis is applied.

Prosthesis is not a treatment option in young and middle-aged patients, except in very rare cases. Prosthesis can be performed in the fractures of elderly, multi-fragmented and osteoporotic patients to avoid many complications (such as displacement and nonunion of bones).
