Frozen Shoulder

In “Frozen Shoulder”, joint capsule is shortened and thickened by inflammation and narrows the joint volume and severely restricts shoulder movements. The fact that distinguishes the frozen shoulder from other diseases that restrict shoulder movements is the limitation of passive shoulder movements of the patient.

When the doctor wants to move the patient’s shoulder by hand, he/she encounters resistance and stiffness and cannot move the joint. In general, pain may also accompany. Diabetes, thyroid hormone deficiency or redundancy, Parkinson’s disease, heath diseases increase the risk.

Although limitation of motion is in the foreground, there is severe pain at the beginning. In the treatment, physical therapy is applied first and both movements are tried to be eased and pain is relieved.

In case there is no benefit with physical therapy, local cortisone injections, manipulation under anesthesia (forcing motions) and arthroscopic relaxation may be applied.

In surgical treatment, the shoulder joint capsule is loosened by arthroscopy and the movements are tried to be eased. However, the patient should know that the treatment can last quite long and prepare himself / herself for it.
